7.If You Really Want to Succeed, Double Your Rate of Failure

Quotations, Week 1 1 Comment

One of the biggest reasons why people don’t try new things is because they are afraid of failing.

The fear of failure has its roots in how we think others perceive us, and also how we perceive ourselves.

The most dominant ‘script’ that we have of ourselves going around our heads every day will affect how we respond to the call to action to attempt success.

How convinced we are about our ability to succeed or fail is largely governed by how likely we think we will succeed at the opportunity we are being presented.

The perceived risk is also determined by the gap we sense between where we are now in our character and skills, and what is required to maximise the chance of success.

But it all starts with what is happening on the inside – in our minds.

I love the paradox of today’s secret of success.

There are two ways to receive the statement:

1) Take it at face value, facing it with fear, saying to yourself that there is no way that you want to fail even more than you are – that’s depressing.

Or,

2) Interpret it in the light of what you know is really true about success: most of the time that you are wanting to achieve something new, you are constantly trimming the direction you take, picking yourself up off the floor when you fall over, learning the set of competencies/skills needed, and moving forwards one step at a time.

It’s this latter approach I’m talking about here.

Listen, when you learned how to walk, you didn’t give up just because you fell over a couple of times. You kept going because you could see that there were things around you that you really wanted, and moreover, there were people around you who could also walk.

You saw walking happening all around you, so you wanted to be able to do it too.

So, what mindset should you be striving for in order to gain the right perspective about ‘doubling your rate of failure’?

These two keys should be present:

1)A passion, or desire that motivates you to get up when you fall

2)A group of encouragers around you who by their actions, results and cheerleading, will enable you to dust yourself down, pick yourself up, and carry on stumbling. walking and eventually running, towards your goal.

What if you don’t have any encouragers, or mentors? Go find some.

Find them in real life, or online, in CD’s/mp3′s or even in books that you read.

Just find them. Find a passion that is other-centered, that will positively affect the lives of people around you.

That’s doubling your rate of failure.

And that’s where real success is hidden.

6.Find Your Biggest Why That Gets You Out of Bed Everyday

Quotations, Week 1 1 Comment

This is probably one of the best secrets of success I’ve come across. The reason is that it starts you thinking about why you are doing what you do from the moment you wake up.

The long term effect of this can’t easily be overstated. The reason is simple: you’re starting your day with the biggest reason to get you out of your comfort zone, your cacooon of safety that shields you from incomplete tasks, challenges, and concerns.

It’s these latter thoughts which will pull you down to the lowest common denominator of the 97% of the population who have backed out, who really don’t want the hassle of creating their own futures. I can well understand.

If I had no bigger purpose to fulfil, no bigger vision to see come into reality, I would be right there with them.

But my big vision helps me deal with the daily responsibilities and commitments that I so otherwise would want to shy away from.

What’s you big vision, or have you lost it? Or maybe you don’t want a bigger vision, just a simple dream that you want to see happen in your life.

5. Don’t Just Work Alone, Find Others to Share Your Vision

Quotations, Week 1 No Comments

There’s a real paradox in the life of a home business owner (of which I am one), and I’ll share it in a minute. But first let me describe the background to this paradox.

Home business owners tend to have a strong desire to be free from the normal hassles of running a traditional "brick and mortar" business, such as franchise agreements, human resource issues, public liability insurance, business lease agreements, and so on.

We want to be free of all the things that tend to clutter and clog up productivity, so we can spend more time with the people that we care about, and do things that will impact the world.

So what is the paradox, or the flipside?

It’s this: amongst all the clutter and clogging up, there are people, there are teams, there is community. When the clutter and clogging isn’t going badly, it can seem more like an unstoppable army marching in the same direction, or a Stealth Bomber executing its mission (you can tell this is a male author).

When you work from home, there is no one there to tell you to keep going, to give you deep insight into how to do something completely differently in order to get a much more efficient or effective result for a given strategy you are attempting to implement.

You are alone. You have to motivate yourself. You have to put yourself out there and find others with whom you can connect.

To some extent you can find this online.

But if you are going to become really successful, you need to do what everyone else does: you must talk to people, on the phone, and face to face.

You should share your visions, goals, strategies with others.

You must find like minded entrepreneurs to connect with, to mastermind and share ideas.

Otherwise you are just a minnow swimming in a vast ocean making very little impact.

That might be something you prefer, but if that’s the case, you are what Robert Kiyosaki describes as a sole trader or self-employed person.

If you want to be an entrepreneur, you need to learn the skills of negotiation, team building, conflict resolution, leadership, top-grading, drawing people’s skills out from them, nurturing the timid, delegation, outsourcing, talent-spotting, integrity building and a lot more besides.

If that’s what you want, go find a team. Connect with others. Build relationships. Meet with people. Share ideas. Learn from their mistakes as well as your own.

Find others to share your vision, and then start to fulfil it.

4.Create Your Goals, and Then Stay Focused Until You Have Achieved Them

Quotations, Week 1 No Comments

There is a famous saying which goes:

Without Vision, The People Are Unrestrained.

In other words, if you have no goal, no vision, then you aren’t going in any particular direction at all: in fact, you are probably going nowhere.

Goal-setting is a no-brainer ingredient required for success. Setting goals doesn’t guarantee success, but not setting goals guarantees failure.

I know, I’ve been there many times.

Sometimes we think of goals as just big-picture visions – as the above saying suggests.

However, in order to gain success every day – in other words, in order to achieve what we set out to do on a daily basis, we should set micro-goals, as well as the macro goals.

And in fact, the same goes for weekly, monthly, 3 monthly, 6 monthly, annually, and so on.

If this sounds systematic, it’s meant to be. If I sound like I have this licked, I don’t. Naturally speaking, I’m a spontaneous type of person, who tends to go where enthusiasms lead him, but when I set my goals on a daily basis, I stand a much better chance of focusing on my end-game, instead of becoming distracted by the latest bright or loud thing that will want to grab my attention.

How about you? What sort of goals do you set?

How do you go about monitoring your achievement of your goals?

Are you naturally an organized person, or, as in my case, have you had to learn how to be disciplined in this area of your life?

3. When Others Slack Off, You Increase Your Game.

Quotations, Week 1 No Comments

Perhaps like noone else, successful people have a drive, focus and ambition that verges on the fanatical.

It’s a person’s vision for their future that fuels them on. Today’s quote is really a reflection of the energy that is released when someone has a burning desire for their goals to be complete, nothing will stop them until they arrive at their destination.

That’s not to say that there won’t be setbacks along the way – that’s just part of life.

But successful people have one thing for sure in common – they almost universally have an ability to increase their game whilst others slack off.

So, if you want to be able to produce a significant push forward when it would otherwise be all too easy to slacken off – find a vision for your future that fuels and fans into flame you ability to take massive action.
